On the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the moon is round and the Chinese people mark their Moon Festival. The round shape of the moon symbolizes family reunion. Therefore, the Moon Festival is a holiday for family members to get together wherever it is possible. During the Moon Festival, people gaze at the moon and feast on moon cakes, a round pastry filled with bean paste, fruit or jam. The moon cakes are often piled high- 13 in a pyramid- to represent the 13 lunar months in the Chinese calendar year. Also, all types of colorful, animal-shaped-paper lanterns- are hung in front or around the house. The supper altars are adorned with five dishes: round fruits, such as apples, peaches, pomegranates, grapes and small melons.
